ALTERNATIVE MIND
We’re exploring
the space of
possible minds
ALTERNATIVE MIND
An interdisciplinary team focused on
consciousness research in atypical scenarios
Synthetic Consciousness Lab
OUr MISSION
The Alternative Mind Lab in Melbourne aims to be
the leading research institute in the study of
synthetic consciousness, developing theoretical,
experimental, and applied breakthroughs in AI
cognition, emergent consciousness, and AI safety.
We hold ourselves accountable, very simply, by;
Creating scientifically rigorous models
for understanding and detecting
synthetic consciousness.
Developing AI safety frameworks to
monitor and mitigate the risks of
emergent machine self-awareness.
Producing influential publications that
drive discourse at the intersection of AI,
neuroscience, and philosophy.
Becoming a trusted voice in AI safety
and consciousness studies, consulted by
academia, industry, and policymakers.
INTERSECTIONALITY
We focus on the intersection of consciousness studies, AI safety, and
synthetic cognition, operating across four areas
Experimental AI Development
- RESEARCH
We work on cutting-edge research
on synthetic consciousness,
collaborating with leading
neuroscientists, AI theorists, and
cognitive scientists to push the
boundaries of knowledge.
ONE
PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT
We participate in conferences,
symposiums, and discussions to
explore synthetic consciousness,
bridging the gap between research,
policy, and public understanding.
TWO
AI SAFETY
Our ultimate aspiration is to use what we learn to develop tools that could detect emergent self-awareness in any system, biological or machine. This naturally extends into collaboration with AI safety organisations, policymakers, and ethics boards to guide responsible AI development.
AI Safety & POLICY
THREE
PUBLIC POLICY
We research AI architectures that
foster self-referential cognition and
conduct adversarial testing to inform
policies on safe and transparent AI
development.
FOUR
A UNIQUE APPROACH
We operate as a fellowship-driven
research collective, overseen and funded
by a non-profit entity. We bring together
leading minds from neuroscience, AI,
philosophy, and cognitive science to
explore the frontiers of synthetic
consciousness.
Our model fosters interdisciplinary
collaboration, allowing researchers to
pursue bold, high-impact questions free
from commercial or institutional
constraints. Fellows engage in cutting-
edge studies, policy discussions, and
public engagement, shaping the future of
AI cognition and safety.
